Splatter Nails

 What I used:

Orly Liquid Vinyl (Black)

OPI Do You Lilac It? (Purple)

Nail Polish Thinner

Small Nail Art Brush

Small bowl (That can be thrown away or is of no value)

Paper plate

**This is a cute fun artsy project but be warned it WILL get messy so wear something that you don't mind getting ruined, do this project outside or lay down lots of newspaper. 

**The nail polish thinner will most likely ruin the small bowl so use something disposable or of no value.

For the top picture I used the colors depicted in the 3 polish set and for the 2nd picture i used the colors depicted in the 6 color set. For this project you can use any colors you like, however the colors will only show up better on a light background. So pick your favorite colors and lets get started!

For these steps I'm using the 2nd picture as the basis.
1. Always use a base coat.
2. Paint your nails a base color, I used white. Depending on your polish you can do 1 or 2 coats. Let it dry.
3. Drop a couple of nail polish (ex. OPI Feelin' Hot-Hot-Hot) into the small bowl and drip a couple of drops of nail polish thinner until your polish becomes watery.
4. Place your hand in the middle of the paper plate. Take the brush and dip it in your watery polish and splat it on your nails. (you can use a flinging motion or simply hold the brush over the nail and tap the brush with your nail/finger)
5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 with the remainder of your colors.
6. Finish with a top coat.

Nail Project Tools

Here are a couple of common tools I use in several projects.

Dotting Tool:

I found this set of double-sided dotting tools on Amazon for $5.25 and eligible for Free Super Saver Shipping. One side of the set it the same size but on the on the other end it has different sizes from big to small.

Palettes:

These are my DIY palettes. On the left is an old CD, I scratched off the colored side and after each use I wipe it off with acetone so the colors don't pile up. In the middle is just a Chinet heavy-duty paper plate. As you can see i just use it a lot.

Sponge:

In my last project I used chunks of triangle makeup sponges. Just to clarify this is what it looks like.

Fading Color Nails

What I used: 

Essie's Sugar Daddy (light pink)

Essie's Loophole (silver)

Orly's Liquid Vinyl (black)

OPI's Meet Me on the Star Ferry (pink/purple)
**Ideally for the silver, black and pink you can use any colors you want**

Makeup triangle sponge (ripped into little chunks)

Paper plate or an Old CD/DVD 

**This is a time consuming project. You can't rush it.

Always start with a base coat before you start a project :) After the base coat I used 2 coats Essie's Sugar Daddy. It comes out as a super light translucent pink.
Now wait till the pink dries, it should not be tacky or wet.

**When you switch colors use a new sponge or switch it to and unused side.

Now for the fun part (she said ominously):
1. On the plate/CD/DVD put a couple of drops of silver
2. Take a piece of sponge and lightly dip into the silver taking the excess by dabbing to the side of the polish
3. Gently start from the tip and work your way down leaving 1-2 cm untouched by the silver. It should be super light.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 each time leaving more space untouched.
5. Now take the color of your choice (I used Orly's Liquid Vinyl for the top picture and OPI's Meet Me on the Star Ferry for the bottom picture) and repeat steps 1-4 but only going half way or even just the tips.

Let everything dry and use a top coat and voilà! C'est magnifique. You're done!

Base Coats & Top Coats

When ever you paint your nails you should always use a base coat to protect your nails and a top coat to seal the polish. plus with the right top coat you'll have a super shiny surface when you are done:)

These are some of my favorite base coats.

These are my favorite top coats.

On the left from left to right is OPI's Natural Nail Base Coat. Then OPI's Nail Envy Nail Strengthener. Third is Seche Clear Crystal Clear Base Coat. Fourth is Essie's All in One Base. Last is Orly's Bonder Rubberized Basecoat. 

OPI's Nail Envy is a better choice if you have brittle or weak nails because it has a strengthening formula.

Orly's Bonder is an interesting base. Due to its formula, it dries with a sticky rubber feel to it. It claims to cling onto the color and nail better. 

On the right from left to right is OPI's Top Coat. Second is Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat. Last is Orly's Won't Chip Protective Polymer Shield.

In my opinion I love Seche Vite because it dries relatively fast and it is a very shiny top coat.

This last polish in the black bottle is Seche's Ultra-V UV Activated Top Coat. With this top coat you have to have a UV nail lamp to cure the top coat, it also has a distinct stink to it but in the end it is super shiny.
